Morning of My Last Day in Hanoi
When I woke up, my throat felt a little sore.
Someone in my room had been coughing… maybe I caught it.
As usual, I had the hostel’s free breakfast.
Today’s fruit was watermelon. I prefer it over bananas.

I repacked my luggage and got everything ready.
I bought a coffee at a nearby convenience store
and looked back at my travel photos while having a smoke.
コーヒーは20k(約120円)。
The coffee was 20k VND (about 120 yen).
This overly sweet coffee will be my last one here.
Three weeks passed in the blink of an eye.
I only had a little money left.
But the 86 bus should accept credit cards, so I should be fine.
She Heads to the Tour Company
After breakfast, the girl I hung out with yesterday
said, “I’m going to the tour company now!” and left.
I wondered if she’d be okay… and if she’d make it back. Haha.
It should’ve been a quick reservation, but she was taking a long time.
Maybe she got lost again?
About an hour later, she came back and we chatted a bit.
She said she’d be leaving for Sapa tonight.
I also had a night flight, so I’d stay at the hostel until evening.
A Walk to Buy Cigarettes
I was running out of cigarettes, so I walked around the area to buy some.
The shop where I bought them for 15k yesterday told me it was 20k today.
I said, “I’ll buy 10 packs, so make it 15k,” and they agreed easily.
15k is probably the real price.
I think the cheapest I saw in another town was 12k… maybe? I don’t remember.
The woman at the shop spoke a little Japanese.
Just “arigatou” and “konnichiwa,” though.
I went back to the hostel and relaxed.
It was past noon. Too hot to go outside.
And I didn’t have anything to do.
So… beer time. Daytime beer.
Buying Bánh Mì
I got a little hungry in the early afternoon.
If I didn’t eat now, I’d probably get hungry on the plane,
so I decided to grab a bánh mì.
Then she asked, “Can you buy one for me too?” Haha.
I didn’t mind since I was buying mine anyway.
But bánh mì often has liver pâté, so I checked with her since she doesn’t eat meat.
When I tried to order “no pâté, with fried egg,” and said “egg”,
they put in an omelet-style egg instead of a fried egg.
Well, it still tasted good, so whatever.
Back at the hostel, I had lunch with a beer.
Train Street in the Evening
When I asked her if she’d been to Train Street,
she said, “Let’s go together!”
In the evening, I took her to Train Street.
It was just about train time, so there were lots of tourists.
For some reason, there were many Indian tourists.

She had apparently checked the train schedule.
Not bad for someone who said she’s bad at planning.
She checks the important parts, I guess. Haha.
After watching the train pass, we returned to the hostel.
Saying Goodbye Before Departure
I relaxed until it was time, then said goodbye to her.
I also said goodbye to the hostel staff and left.
Taking Bus 86 to the Airport
I walked to the bus stop.
But the bus didn’t come for a long time. I waited about 45 minutes.
Online info said every 30 minutes, but it must’ve been rush hour.
I paid with my credit card—easy.
The bus even had free Wi-Fi.
Arriving at the Airport… But Then
I arrived at the airport, but the counters weren’t open.

I had checked in online, but ticket printing was counter-only.
This was the beginning of a long wait.
I waited about one hour for the counter to open.
Then another 30+ minutes to get my ticket.
I came early to enjoy the lounge… ruined.
My bag was 6.7kg—well under the 10kg limit.
A staff member tried to put my backpack on the checked-luggage belt,
so I stopped him.
I could’ve checked it since I’d arrive at 8 a.m., but I wanted to smoke right away.
Then came immigration.
It was packed, and took a long time to get through.
It took about three hours from arrival to clearing immigration.
It felt endless.
Shower in the Lounge
I headed straight to the lounge.
First, I booked a shower.
Five minutes after sitting down, it was already my turn.
When I told them, “I’m eating now, can I come in five minutes?”

They smiled and said, “Of course, Satoshi!”
Impressive they remembered my name. Haha.
Then I headed to the shower.
This was my first time actually using a lounge shower.
I had been in lounges with showers before,
but I wasn’t sweaty or didn’t have time,
so I never used them even though I had the chance.
So this was my real “lounge shower debut.”

The shower room had soap, shampoo, cotton swabs, and towels.
There was a hair dryer outside.
The water got hot, but the pressure was weak.
Feeling refreshed, I went for round two of food.
Changes in the Lounge
I grabbed beer and food and relaxed.
Since I was flying ANA, I’d get water onboard,
but I wanted to take a bottle from the lounge.
But the bottled water was gone—now it was dispenser-only.
Maybe too many people took them… or maybe for eco reasons.
Beer used to be self-serve, but now you had to ask at the bar.
Snacks were gone too.
Probably removed because people took too much.

Panicking at “Last Boarding”
I went to the smoking room for a final cigarette, and while checking the flight info,
「Last Boarding」。
I saw “Last Boarding.”
No way—already?
I put out my cigarette halfway and rushed to the gate.
It was close, so I got there quickly.
But boarding had just started and there was a long line.
Come on… don’t scare me like that. I could’ve smoked longer.
Boarding was smooth—the line moved quickly and it was my turn in no time.
I boarded the plane.
On the Plane
Most of the cabin crew were Japanese.
It was easy to communicate, but it made me feel like the trip was really ending.
We departed around 23:30, almost on time.
I thought a night flight would be quiet, but there were two kids nearby
and a crying baby behind me.
It’s luck, but still… loud.
Late Night in the Cabin
When I asked the crew about meal time,
they said drinks after leveling off, and meals around 4 a.m. Japan time.
The drink service wasn’t a cart—just a bottle of water and a snack.
I wanted a beer…
So after they finished, I called a crew member and got a beer.
I watched a movie with my snack.
Finished around 2 a.m. Vietnam time.
Good night.
Breakfast and Landing
Because I was using my earphones as earplugs,
I didn’t notice at all that the meal service had started.
Even though the cabin was getting noisy, everything had been completely blocked out.
When I hurriedly pulled out my tray table, the crew immediately brought my meal.
And there was no menu placed at the seat.
So the flight attendant simply asked me directly, “Japanese or Western meal?”
I chose the Western meal, but that was a mistake.
Tomato sauce, mashed potatoes, and sausage… too heavy for breakfast.
I should’ve gone with the Japanese option.
I put the leftover yogurt in my bag.
My throat hurt, so I went to the galley and got a candy.
About an hour later, we began our descent.
We arrived at Narita on time.
Returning to Japan

Immigration in Japan was smooth—finished in about 20 minutes.
I bought cigarettes at the arrival duty-free shop.
It was at the far end of the floor, so I had to walk quite a bit.
In Vietnam it was 25 USD per carton, but Japan was cheaper.
After entering Japan, I headed straight to the smoking area.
Finally being able to smoke felt like a relief.
After organizing my luggage a bit and calming down,
I naturally headed to the restroom.
Out of habit, I looked for the bidet hose and trash bin.
But this is Japan—there’s a washlet, and toilet paper goes straight into the bowl.
I sent my backpack home via airport delivery service.
I took the Keisei local line home and arrived around 10 a.m.
After Returning Home
First, I took a shower and sorted my luggage while drinking a beer.
I couldn’t sleep well on the plane, so I took a nap.
When I woke up, it was already evening.
I finished unpacking and went to bed.
Lying in bed, all the fun memories came back.
The trip was over. I wonder when I can travel again.
