朝、宿の無料コーヒーをいただく。
In the morning, I enjoyed the free coffee at the guesthouse.
今泊まっている宿は安いのに清潔で、無料の紅茶とコーヒーもある。
The guesthouse I’m staying at now is inexpensive yet clean, and it even offers free tea and coffee.
洗濯機の利用も無料で、ベッドも快適で申し分ない。
The washing machine is free to use, and the bed is wonderfully comfortable.
宿泊しているゲストは、私を含めて5人ほどだろうか。
There are about five guests staying here, including myself.
宿泊客が少ないせいか、バスルームは2つしかなかったが、他のゲストと重なって使えないことはなかった。
Perhaps because there were few guests, there were only two bathrooms, but I never had trouble using them at the same time as others.
近くにはセブンイレブンやロータスもあり、生活に不便はない。
There’s a 7-Eleven and a Lotus nearby, so I don’t lack anything.
宿の近くを少し散歩すると、フルーツの屋台が出ていたのでパイナップルを購入。30B（約150円）。
I took a short walk near the guesthouse and found a fruit stall, where I bought a pineapple for 30 baht (about 150 yen).
ソフトボールより少し大きいくらいの小ぶりなパイナップルだったが、驚くほど甘くて美味しい。砂糖漬けのフルーツかと思うほどだった。
It was a small pineapple, just a bit larger than a softball, but incredibly sweet—almost like candied fruit.
外でコーヒーを飲みながら煙草を一服。朝の風はひんやりしていて心地よい。半袖では少し寒いくらいだ。
I had a smoke while drinking coffee outside. The morning breeze was cool and refreshing, almost chilly in short sleeves.
午前中は次のチェンマイの宿を予約したり、荷物を整理したりして過ごした。
I spent the morning booking my next guesthouse in Chiang Mai and organizing my luggage.
今日は明日チェンマイへ向かうため、バスターミナル近くの宿へ移動する。
Today, I’m moving to a guesthouse near the bus terminal in preparation for tomorrow’s trip to Chiang Mai.
チェックアウトの際に鍵を返すと、ロッカーにジーパンを入れっぱなしだったことをスタッフが教えてくれた。危なかった。
When I checked out and returned the key, the staff told me I had left my jeans in the locker. That was close.
次の宿までは2.5kmほどなので歩けるが、ソンテウに乗るため駅近くまで行く。
The next guesthouse is about 2.5 km away, so I could walk, but I went near the station to catch a songthaew.
しかし、目の前でソンテウが行ってしまった。
But the songthaew left right in front of me.
ソンテウで行っても10B（約50円）だが、暑い中待つくらいならダメ元でヒッチハイクしてみる。
It only costs 10 baht (about 50 yen) by songthaew, but instead of waiting in the heat, I tried hitchhiking.
今回の旅で初めてのヒッチハイク。
It was my first hitchhike of this trip.
5分ほどで、一台のバイクが逆方向から戻ってきてくれた。
After about five minutes, a motorcycle came back from the opposite direction.
乗せてくれたのはイギリス人男性だった。
The rider was a British man.
バイクに乗りながら少し話をすると、「日本人もヒッチハイクするのかい？」と聞かれた。
While riding, he asked me, “Do Japanese people hitchhike too?”
私は「タイでのヒッチハイクは割と簡単だから、たまにやるよ」と答えた。
I replied, “Hitchhiking in Thailand is fairly easy, so I do it sometimes.”
バスターミナル近くの交差点で降ろしてもらい、お礼を言って握手して別れた。
He dropped me off near the bus terminal intersection, and we parted with thanks and a handshake.
宿には看板がなく、見つけにくかった。
The guesthouse had no sign, so it was hard to find.
隣の宿には大きく「HOSTEL」と書かれていたが、名前が違う。
The neighboring guesthouse had a big “HOSTEL” sign, but it was a different name.
すると、その宿から白人男性が出てきて「ここに泊まるのか？」と聞いてきた。
Then a foreign man came out of that hostel and asked, “Are you staying here?”
私は「いや、違うHOSTELなんだけど…地図ではこの辺なんだ」と答えた。
I said, “No, it’s a different hostel… but the map shows it around here.”
その男性がオーナーに聞いてくれて、隣の建物だと分かった。
He asked the owner and found out it was the building next door.
しかし隣の建物には看板がなく、中では荷物を整理していて宅配業者のようだった。
But the next building had no sign, and inside people were sorting packages—it looked like a delivery company.
とりあえず入って宿を探していると伝えると、「ここだよ」と言われた。
I went inside and said I was looking for the guesthouse, and they replied, “This is it.”
宅配業がメインで、宿は副業のようだ。
Apparently, delivery was their main business, and the guesthouse was secondary.
やっとチェックイン。
Finally, I checked in.
荷物を置き、昨日買ったズボンの裾が長いので、路上の縫製屋に丈詰めを頼もうとした。
I left my luggage and went to a street tailor to shorten the trousers I bought yesterday.
しかし頼んでもみんな断ってくる。なぜだろう。
But everyone refused when I asked. I wonder why.
諦めて食事を探すことにした。
I gave up and looked for food instead.
小腹が空いたので、セブンでビールとハンバーガーを購入。
Feeling a bit hungry, I bought beer and a hamburger at 7-Eleven.
食堂で食べてもいいが、小食の私には量が多すぎる。
I could eat at a restaurant, but the portions are too big for me.
コンビニでこんなものを見つけた。
I found something interesting at a convenience store.
日本では有名な「かっぱえびせん」。
It was the well-known Japanese snack, “Kappa Ebisen.”
そのすぐ隣に、なんと偽物らしき商品が並んでいた。
Right next to it, there was what looked like a knockoff version.
日本のお菓子はエビの風味が特徴。でも、その偽物にはロブスターの絵が描かれていて、まるで挑発しているかのようだった。
Japanese snacks are known for their shrimp flavor. But this imitation had a picture of a lobster on it, as if it were picking a fight.
しかも、正規品のすぐ隣に陳列されている。
To top it off, it was displayed right next to the original.
一度食べ比べて、味の違いを確かめてみたいものだ。
I’d love to try both someday and compare the flavors.
今日は予定がないので、観光できる場所をネットで探す。
Since I had no plans today, I searched online for sightseeing spots.
すると、20kmほど先に「レインツリー（Giant Raintree (Monkey Pod Tree)）」という大きな木がある公園があるらしい。
I found a park about 20 km away with a huge tree called the Rain Tree.
バイクを借りて見に行こうとしたが、宿のレンタルバイクはすべて貸出中。
I tried to rent a bike to go there, but all the guesthouse bikes were taken.
宿の人が他の店に電話してくれたが、空きはなかった。
The staff called other shops, but none were available.
バスターミナルでバイクタクシーを捕まえたが、往復300Bと言われて断念。
I caught a motorcycle taxi at the bus terminal, but the fare was 300 baht round trip, so I gave up.
元の宿付近まで戻ればレンタルは多いが、返すのが面倒。
There are many rentals near my previous guesthouse, but returning it would be troublesome.
諦めて散歩することにした。
So I decided to just take a walk.
宿から15分ほど歩いたところにある製紙工場跡を見に行った。
I visited the ruins of a paper mill about 15 minutes’ walk from the guesthouse.
製紙工場の跡地に到着した。
I arrived at the site of an old paper mill.
入場は無料だが、入口で名前を記帳させられた。
Admission was free, but I had to sign my name at the entrance.
ここはタイで2番目に古い製紙工場だったらしい。
It was apparently the second oldest paper mill in Thailand.
戦時中は切手や紙幣も作っていたそうだ。
Apparently, they even produced stamps and banknotes during the war.
私は特に廃墟マニアというわけではないが、こういう場所には男の子心をくすぐられる。
I’m not exactly a ruin enthusiast, but places like this stir something adventurous in me.
中には入れなかったが、壊れた窓から中を覗いて写真を撮った。
I couldn’t go inside, but I managed to snap some photos through the broken windows.
建物の裏側は、植物に覆われている部分もあった。
Parts of the building’s backside were overgrown with plants.
まるでカンボジアのタ・プロームを思わせる光景だ。
It reminded me of Ta Prohm in Cambodia.
敷地はかなり広いが、見どころのある建物はそれほど多くない。
The grounds were quite spacious, though there weren’t many structures worth exploring.
それでも、私はゆっくりと1時間ほどかけて見て回った。
Still, I took my time and spent about an hour wandering around.
もう少し整備すれば、立派な観光地になりそうな気がする。
With a bit of maintenance, I think this place could become a proper tourist spot.
無料だけど、私にとっては結構、見ごたえがあって楽しめた。
It was free to enter, but I found it surprisingly engaging and enjoyable.
その後はそこからほど近いところにある、戦争記念館に行ってみた。
After that, I decided to visit the war memorial museum located not far from there.
入り口で、入場料50B（約250円）支払うも、お釣りを貰うのを忘れてスタッフに、
お釣りあるから待てと言われた。
At the entrance, I paid the 50B (about 250 yen) admission fee, but forgot to collect my change.
One of the staff members told me to wait because I still had change coming.
親切だなー。
That was really kind of them.
展示は、日本人は悪いことをした！って内容ばかり。
The exhibits were mostly focused on the message: “The Japanese did terrible things!”
勿論やったことは非人道的だったけど。
Of course, the things that were done were inhumane.
それが、戦争だったんだよ。
But that’s what war was.
戦争記念館を見終わってから、川沿いに行ってみる。
After finishing the museum tour, I headed toward the riverside.
夜は歩行者天国になる通りを覗いてみたが、
I peeked down a street that supposedly becomes a pedestrian zone at night,
なんと、土曜日（昨日）だけだって、残念。
but it turns out it only happens on Saturdays—yesterday, unfortunately.
だから、前の宿の人が昨晩、ここに行くって言っていたのか。
Ah, that’s why someone from my previous guesthouse said they were going there last night.
毎日開催じゃなかったのね。
I didn’t realize it wasn’t held every day.
宿に戻って、屋上でビール飲みながら休憩。
I returned to the guesthouse and took a break on the rooftop with a beer.
夜は、ビールの締めとして１本隣の道で開かれている小規模なナイトマーケットで麵料理を食べる。50B（約250円）
To wrap up the night,
I went to a small night market on the next street over and had a bowl of noodles for 50B (about 250 yen).
あと、最後のデザートとしてソフトクリームも。15B（約75円）
And for dessert, I treated myself to a soft-serve ice cream for 15B (about 75 yen).
これで、今日はお終い。
That was the end of my day.
明日は、チェンマイまで12時間の長いバス旅。
Tomorrow, I have a long 12-hour bus journey ahead to Chiang Mai.
